BACKGROUND The perceptual assessment of velopharyngeal function during speech presents some limitations due to its subjectivity. OBJECTIVE To propose a method for velopharyngeal function rating based on hypernasality, nasal air emission and compensatory articulation deficits scores. CONCLUSIONS The proposed method shows several advantages in terms of clinical and research documentation and for an adequate follow-up of therapeutic and surgical outcomes.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D009296 Nasal Cavity The proximal portion of the respiratory passages on either side of the NASAL SEPTUM. Nasal cavities, extending from the nares to the NASOPHARYNX, are lined with ciliated NASAL MUCOSA. Nasal Cavities,Cavities, Nasal,Cavity, Nasal
D010160 Palate, Soft A movable fold suspended from the posterior border of the hard palate. The uvula hangs from the middle of the lower border. Velum Palatinum,Soft Palate,Palates, Soft,Palatinum, Velum
D010614 Pharynx A funnel-shaped fibromuscular tube that conducts food to the ESOPHAGUS, and air to the LARYNX and LUNGS. It is located posterior to the NASAL CAVITY; ORAL CAVITY; and LARYNX, and extends from the SKULL BASE to the inferior border of the CRICOID CARTILAGE anteriorly and to the inferior border of the C6 vertebra posteriorly. It is divided into the NASOPHARYNX; OROPHARYNX; and HYPOPHARYNX (laryngopharynx). Throat,Pharynxs,Throats
D002971 Cleft Lip Congenital defect in the upper lip where the maxillary prominence fails to merge with the merged medial nasal prominences. It is thought to be caused by faulty migration of the mesoderm in the head region. Harelip,Cleft Lips,Harelips,Lip, Cleft,Lips, Cleft
D002972 Cleft Palate Congenital fissure of the soft and/or hard palate, due to faulty fusion. Cleft Palate, Isolated,Cleft Palates,Palate, Cleft,Palates, Cleft

D014681 Velopharyngeal Insufficiency Failure of the SOFT PALATE to reach the posterior pharyngeal wall to close the opening between the oral and nasal cavities. Incomplete velopharyngeal closure is primarily related to surgeries (ADENOIDECTOMY; CLEFT PALATE) or an incompetent PALATOPHARYNGEAL SPHINCTER. It is characterized by hypernasal speech.
