The relationship between somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) and recovery from stroke was investigated in 12 patients. All had suffered recent cerebral infarction. SEPs were performed within the first week, 6 weeks, 3 months and 6 months after stroke onset. Improvement of initially abnormal SEPs was maximal in the first 6 weeks and this correlated closely with the period of maximum clinical improvement. The results of this study suggest that the major effect of stroke on SEPs occurs acutely and is little affected by secondary degenerative processes.

D008475 Median Nerve A major nerve of the upper extremity. In humans, the fibers of the median nerve originate in the lower cervical and upper thoracic spinal cord (usually C6 to T1), travel via the brachial plexus, and supply sensory and motor innervation to parts of the forearm and hand. D008875 Middle Aged An adult aged 45 - 64 years. Middle Age
D008991 Monitoring, Physiologic The continuous measurement of physiological processes, blood pressure, heart rate, renal output, reflexes, respiration, etc., in a patient or experimental animal; includes pharmacologic monitoring, the measurement of administered drugs or their metabolites in the blood, tissues, or urine.
