Cutaneous wound healing in space. 1991

Department of Dermatology, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City.

With the expected increase in extended-length space exploration missions and the establishment of permanent space stations, there is an increased chance of cutaneous injury occurring in astronauts due to trauma or unexpected emergency surgery. Will these wounds heal properly in space? This question remains unanswered. Several basic areas of the wound healing process need to be investigated through controlled scientific studies on spaceflights.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008264 Macrophages The relatively long-lived phagocytic cell of mammalian tissues that are derived from blood MONOCYTES. Main types are PERITONEAL MACROPHAGES; ALVEOLAR MACROPHAGES; HISTIOCYTES; KUPFFER CELLS of the liver; and OSTEOCLASTS. They may further differentiate within chronic inflammatory lesions to EPITHELIOID CELLS or may fuse to form FOREIGN BODY GIANT CELLS or LANGHANS GIANT CELLS. D005353 Fibronectins Glycoproteins found on the surfaces of cells, particularly in fibrillar structures. The proteins are lost or reduced when these cells undergo viral or chemical transformation. They are highly susceptible to proteolysis and are substrates for activated blood coagulation factor VIII. The forms present in plasma are called cold-insoluble globulins.
