OBJECTIVE Predict long-term refractive changes after primary lens implantation for unilateral congenital cataract in order to know the intraocular lens power to use to obtain best functional results. METHODS This retrospective study analyzed 53 children with unilateral congenital cataract operated on with primary intraocular lens implantation, with a mean follow-up of 6.8 years. The mean age at surgery was 2.98 years. RESULTS The mean myopic shift per year was -0.83 D/year. Children operated on before the age of 2 years had a mean myopic shift of -9.15 D, and others presented -2.13 D. The variability of myopic shift decreased with age. The mean visual acuity was +0.25 logMAR. Four intraocular lenses were changed because of substantial anisometropia. CONCLUSIONS Early surgery with primary implantation and intensive amblyopia treatment provide good long-term visual results. Long-term refractive changes of very young children operated on for unilateral congenital cataract is extremely variable. Changing the intraocular lens is conceivable when substantial anisometropia slows down amblyopia rehabilitation.

D002386 Cataract Partial or complete opacity on or in the lens or capsule of one or both eyes, impairing vision or causing blindness. The many kinds of cataract are classified by their morphology (size, shape, location) or etiology (cause and time of occurrence). D012189 Retrospective Studies Studies used to test etiologic hypotheses in which inferences about an exposure to putative causal factors are derived from data relating to characteristics of persons under study or to events or experiences in their past. The essential feature is that some of the persons under study have the disease or outcome of interest and their characteristics are compared with those of unaffected persons. D013997 Time Factors Elements of limited time intervals, contributing to particular results or situations. Time Series,Factor, Time,Time Factor
D014792 Visual Acuity Clarity or sharpness of OCULAR VISION or the ability of the eye to see fine details. Visual acuity depends on the functions of RETINA, neuronal transmission, and the interpretative ability of the brain. Normal visual acuity is expressed as 20/20 indicating that one can see at 20 feet what should normally be seen at that distance. Visual acuity can also be influenced by brightness, color, and contrast. Acuities, Visual,Acuity, Visual,Visual Acuities
D016896 Treatment Outcome Evaluation undertaken to assess the results or consequences of management and procedures used in combating disease in order to determine the efficacy, effectiveness, safety, and practicability of these interventions in individual cases or series.
