OBJECTIVE To prove that the terminal ileum is intussuscepted into the cecum creating the ileocecal junction, contrary to previous valvular concept which has been widely believed. METHODS This study is based on gross and microscopic examinations of fresh specimens derived from colonic operations (right hemicolectomy or subtotal colectomy). Data compiled from observing and dissecting of specimens of seven patients are used to examine both gross and microscopic appearance of ileocecal junction. RESULTS Intussusception of the terminal ileum was found in every specimen. However, the length of intussusception was different in each specimen. CONCLUSIONS Gross and microscopic appearance studies suggest that the terminal ileum is intussuscepted into the cecum.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007077 Ileal Diseases Pathological development in the ILEUM including the ILEOCECAL VALVE. Disease, Ileal,Diseases, Ileal,Ileal Disease
D007080 Ileocecal Valve The valve, at the junction of the CECUM with the COLON, that guards the opening where the ILEUM enters the LARGE INTESTINE. Ileocecal Valves,Valve, Ileocecal,Valves, Ileocecal
D007082 Ileum The distal and narrowest portion of the SMALL INTESTINE, between the JEJUNUM and the ILEOCECAL VALVE of the LARGE INTESTINE.
D007443 Intussusception A form of intestinal obstruction caused by the PROLAPSE of a part of the intestine into the adjoining intestinal lumen. There are four types: colic, involving segments of the LARGE INTESTINE; enteric, involving only the SMALL INTESTINE; ileocecal, in which the ILEOCECAL VALVE prolapses into the CECUM, drawing the ILEUM along with it; and ileocolic, in which the ileum prolapses through the ileocecal valve into the COLON. D008875 Middle Aged An adult aged 45 - 64 years. Middle Age
D002432 Cecum The blind sac or outpouching area of the LARGE INTESTINE that is below the entrance of the SMALL INTESTINE. It has a worm-like extension, the vermiform APPENDIX. Cecums
