BACKGROUND Multifocal nodular oncocytic hyperplasia (MNOH) is a rare lesion of the parotid gland. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) in MNOH has not been described previously to the best of our knowledge. METHODS A 55-year-old woman presented with a lump at the left angle of her mouth for 2 months. Local examination revealed a hard, nontender parotid mass. FNAC revealed clusters as well as discretely lying oncocytic cells. cells at places showed moderate nuclear pleomorphism. The features were consistent with a diagnosis of oncocytic neoplasm neoplasm; however, because of pleomorphism, a suspicion of carcinoma was offered. The patient underwent superficial parotidectomy, and histopathology examination revealed it to be multifocal nodular oncocytic hyperplasia. CONCLUSIONS MNOH is a rare nonneoplastic salivary gland lesion and should be considered in the differential diagnosis of oncocytic neoplasm on FNAC.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D006965 Hyperplasia An increase in the number of cells in a tissue or organ without tumor formation. It differs from HYPERTROPHY, which is an increase in bulk without an increase in the number of cells. Hyperplasias
D008875 Middle Aged An adult aged 45 - 64 years. Middle Age
D008928 Mitochondria Semiautonomous, self-reproducing organelles that occur in the cytoplasm of all cells of most, but not all, eukaryotes. Each mitochondrion is surrounded by a double limiting membrane. The inner membrane is highly invaginated, and its projections are called cristae. Mitochondria are the sites of the reactions of oxidative phosphorylation, which result in the formation of ATP. They contain distinctive RIBOSOMES, transfer RNAs (RNA, TRANSFER); AMINO ACYL T RNA SYNTHETASES; and elongation and termination factors. Mitochondria depend upon genes within the nucleus of the cells in which they reside for many essential messenger RNAs (RNA, MESSENGER). Mitochondria are believed to have arisen from aerobic bacteria that established a symbiotic relationship with primitive protoeukaryotes. D010306 Parotid Gland The largest of the three pairs of SALIVARY GLANDS. They lie on the sides of the FACE immediately below and in front of the EAR. Gland, Parotid,Glands, Parotid,Parotid Glands
D004847 Epithelial Cells Cells that line the inner and outer surfaces of the body by forming cellular layers (EPITHELIUM) or masses. Epithelial cells lining the SKIN; the MOUTH; the NOSE; and the ANAL CANAL derive from ectoderm; those lining the RESPIRATORY SYSTEM and the DIGESTIVE SYSTEM derive from endoderm; others (CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM and LYMPHATIC SYSTEM) derive from mesoderm. Epithelial cells can be classified mainly by cell shape and function into squamous, glandular and transitional epithelial cells. D024862 Oxyphil Cells Large cells with small irregular nuclei and dense acidophilic granules due to the presence of abundant MITOCHONDRIA. Oxyphil cells, also known as oncocytes, are found in oncocytomas of the kidney, salivary glands, and endocrine glands. In the thyroid gland, oxyphil cells are known as Hurthle cells and Askenazy cells.
