In rat kidney several mitochondrial and soluble enzyme activities are stimulated by thyroid hormones and the mitochondrial membrane fluidity is also increased. However, the ketone metabolism enzyme activities of D-3-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase and of 3-oxoacid CoA-transferase are not significantly affected by the hyperthyroid state and the ketone body concentration is not greatly changed. Therefore, in hyperthyroid rats the response of the kidney, as far as the ketone bodies and their metabolizing enzymes are concerned, is at variance with that of the liver and the heart. In the brain of young rats, age 8-9 weeks, the activities of the enzymes of ketone body metabolism and those responsible for other metabolic pathways are not influenced by the hyperthyroid state. In these animals, however, the activities of two enzymes, NAD-isocitrate dehydrogenase and pyruvate kinase, are still stimulated by 28 and 41%, respectively. This can be probably related to the higher energy requirement for definitive brain maturation in young hyperthyroid rats.

D007657 Ketone Bodies The metabolic substances ACETONE; 3-HYDROXYBUTYRIC ACID; and acetoacetic acid (ACETOACETATES). They are produced in the liver and kidney during FATTY ACIDS oxidation and used as a source of energy by the heart, muscle and brain. Acetone Bodies,Bodies, Acetone,Bodies, Ketone
D007668 Kidney Body organ that filters blood for the secretion of URINE and that regulates ion concentrations. Kidneys

D008560 Membrane Fluidity The motion of phospholipid molecules within the lipid bilayer, dependent on the classes of phospholipids present, their fatty acid composition and degree of unsaturation of the acyl chains, the cholesterol concentration, and temperature. D008928 Mitochondria Semiautonomous, self-reproducing organelles that occur in the cytoplasm of all cells of most, but not all, eukaryotes. Each mitochondrion is surrounded by a double limiting membrane. The inner membrane is highly invaginated, and its projections are called cristae. Mitochondria are the sites of the reactions of oxidative phosphorylation, which result in the formation of ATP. They contain distinctive RIBOSOMES, transfer RNAs (RNA, TRANSFER); AMINO ACYL T RNA SYNTHETASES; and elongation and termination factors. Mitochondria depend upon genes within the nucleus of the cells in which they reside for many essential messenger RNAs (RNA, MESSENGER). Mitochondria are believed to have arisen from aerobic bacteria that established a symbiotic relationship with primitive protoeukaryotes. D001921 Brain The part of CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM that is contained within the skull (CRANIUM). Arising from the NEURAL TUBE, the embryonic brain is comprised of three major parts including PROSENCEPHALON (the forebrain); MESENCEPHALON (the midbrain); and RHOMBENCEPHALON (the hindbrain). The developed brain consists of CEREBRUM; CEREBELLUM; and other structures in the BRAIN STEM. Encephalon
D005227 Fatty Acids Organic, monobasic acids derived from hydrocarbons by the equivalent of oxidation of a methyl group to an alcohol, aldehyde, and then acid. Fatty acids are saturated and unsaturated (FATTY ACIDS, UNSATURATED). D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA.
