[Clinical application of expanded forearm reverse dorsal interosseous artery island flap]. 1991

Dept of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Ninth people's Hospital, Shanghai 2nd Medical University.

The island flap based distally on the posterior interosseous artery has been proven to be available for the correction of severe cicatricial contracture deformity of the ipsilateral hand. However, the main disadvantages of this flap are the second donor area deformity and muscle or tendon adhesions after skin grafting. Both these complications may be ameliorated by means of tissue expansion to obtain a secure blood supply to the flap. The surgical procedure has been performed in 7 patients with satisfactory result since August 1989.

D013524 Surgical Flaps Tongues of skin and subcutaneous tissue, sometimes including muscle, cut away from the underlying parts but often still attached at one end. They retain their own microvasculature which is also transferred to the new site. They are often used in plastic surgery for filling a defect in a neighboring region. D015625 Tissue Expansion Devices Devices used to generate extra soft tissue in vivo to be used in surgical reconstructions. They exert stretching forces on the tissue and thus stimulate new growth and result in TISSUE EXPANSION. They are commonly inflatable reservoirs, usually made of silicone, which are implanted under the tissue and gradually inflated. Other tissue expanders exert stretching forces by attaching to outside of the body, for example, vacuum tissue expanders. Once the tissue has grown, the expander is removed and the expanded tissue is used to cover the area being reconstructed.
