OBJECTIVE To evaluate the conservative laparoscopic approach to adnexal torsion during reproductive age. METHODS We present 18 patients with adnexal torsion between January 1997 and December 2005. Patients treated conservatively were controlled by ultrasonography during the postoperative period. RESULTS Of 18 patients with adnexal torsion, 12 patients were treated by conservative laparoscopic surgery after detorsion, one patient with only tubal torsion had undergone laparoscopic salpengectomy. Laparoscopy was converted to laparotomy after laparoscopic detorsion in five cases. Of five patients in this group, four patients was performed cystectomy, one patient salpingo-oopherectomy. Conservative treatment was carried out in 16 of 18 cases with adnexal torsions. CONCLUSIONS Conservative management is a safe way to preserve the ovarian function during the reproductive period.

D012189 Retrospective Studies Studies used to test etiologic hypotheses in which inferences about an exposure to putative causal factors are derived from data relating to characteristics of persons under study or to events or experiences in their past. The essential feature is that some of the persons under study have the disease or outcome of interest and their characteristics are compared with those of unaffected persons. D015331 Cohort Studies Studies in which subsets of a defined population are identified. These groups may or may not be exposed to factors hypothesized to influence the probability of the occurrence of a particular disease or other outcome. Cohorts are defined populations which, as a whole, are followed in an attempt to determine distinguishing subgroup characteristics.
