The most variable component of energy expenditure is activity. Fidgeting, an undetectable type of low-grade activity, may account for more expenditure than once thought. Television viewing, which is considered a major source of inactivity, and parents' activity patterns are both directly related to childhood obesity. Physical activity, preferably routine or life-style activities, used in the context of a mixed program involving diet can have a significant impact on childhood obesity.
