A serine/threonine protein kinase was partially purified from Neurospora crassa. Its physical and catalytic properties were typical of casein kinase II. In vitro, the kinase phosphorylated a calpain like protease from Allomyces arbuscula with higher affinity than a mixture of caseins.

D002154 Calpain Cysteine proteinase found in many tissues. Hydrolyzes a variety of endogenous proteins including NEUROPEPTIDES; CYTOSKELETAL PROTEINS; proteins from SMOOTH MUSCLE; CARDIAC MUSCLE; liver; platelets; and erythrocytes. Two subclasses having high and low calcium sensitivity are known. Removes Z-discs and M-lines from myofibrils. Activates phosphorylase kinase and cyclic nucleotide-independent protein kinase. D047388 Casein Kinases A group of protein-serine-threonine kinases that was originally identified as being responsible for the PHOSPHORYLATION of CASEINS. They are ubiquitous enzymes that have a preference for acidic proteins. Casein kinases play a role in SIGNAL TRANSDUCTION by phosphorylating a variety of regulatory cytoplasmic and regulatory nuclear proteins. Casein Kinase,Kinase, Casein,Kinases, Casein
