In the present study the Authors, using the Scanning Electron Microscope (magnification max. = 1.500 X), compare the finishing of gold-porcelain crown's surfaces clinically obtainable, after finishing by diamond points, with the polishing realized by means of glazing laboratory procedures. The survey demonstrates a great difference between the two techniques, showing large furrows on the surfaces when polished using silicon rubber points while they were perfectly smooth when glazed in laboratory.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008855 Microscopy, Electron, Scanning Microscopy in which the object is examined directly by an electron beam scanning the specimen point-by-point. The image is constructed by detecting the products of specimen interactions that are projected above the plane of the sample, such as backscattered electrons. Although SCANNING TRANSMISSION ELECTRON MICROSCOPY also scans the specimen point by point with the electron beam, the image is constructed by detecting the electrons, or their interaction products that are transmitted through the sample plane, so that is a form of TRANSMISSION ELECTRON MICROSCOPY. D003442 Crowns A prosthetic restoration that reproduces the entire surface anatomy of the visible natural crown of a tooth. It may be partial (covering three or more surfaces of a tooth) or complete (covering all surfaces). It is made of gold or other metal, porcelain, or resin. D003767 Dental Occlusion, Balanced Dental occlusion in which the occlusal contact of the teeth on the working side of the jaw is accompanied by the harmonious contact of the teeth on the opposite (balancing) side. D003775 Dental Polishing Creation of a smooth and glossy surface finish on a denture or amalgam. Dental Burnishing,Dental Finishing,Burnishing, Dental,Finishing, Dental,Polishing, Dental
D003776 Dental Porcelain A type of porcelain used in dental restorations, either jacket crowns or inlays, artificial teeth, or metal-ceramic crowns. It is essentially a mixture of particles of feldspar and quartz, the feldspar melting first and providing a glass matrix for the quartz. Dental porcelain is produced by mixing ceramic powder (a mixture of quartz, kaolin, pigments, opacifiers, a suitable flux, and other substances) with distilled water. D006047 Gold Alloys Alloys that contain a high percentage of gold. They are used in restorative or prosthetic dentistry. Gold Alloy,Alloy, Gold,Alloys, Gold
D012826 Silicone Elastomers Polymers of silicone that are formed by crosslinking and treatment with amorphous silica to increase strength. They have properties similar to vulcanized natural rubber, in that they stretch under tension, retract rapidly, and fully recover to their original dimensions upon release. They are used in the encapsulation of surgical membranes and implants.
