Since 1987 consultation-liaison (C-L) psychiatrists in Europe have decided to develop a closer collaboration to stimulate the development of the C-L field. A first result of this collaboration is a companion paper on the history and current state of C-L psychiatry in Europe. This paper describes the arguments for the development of the European Consultation-Liaison Workgroup for General Hospital Psychiatry and Psychosomatics (ECLW), and the results of the first 3 years of collaboration.
