Department of Otolaryngology, Eye and Ear Institute, Pittsburgh, Pa. 15213.

Burn injuries of the larynx are a previously unrecognized complication of cocaine abuse. The clinical presentations and magnetic resonance imaging findings of two patients are presented. Recognition of this entity is important to avoid errors in diagnosis and in management.

D008279 Magnetic Resonance Imaging Non-invasive method of demonstrating internal anatomy based on the principle that atomic nuclei in a strong magnetic field absorb pulses of radiofrequency energy and emit them as radiowaves which can be reconstructed into computerized images. The concept includes proton spin tomographic techniques. D002057 Burns, Chemical Burns caused by contact with or exposure to CAUSTICS or strong ACIDS. Chemical Burns,Burn, Chemical,Chemical Burn
D003042 Cocaine An alkaloid ester extracted from the leaves of plants including coca. It is a local anesthetic and vasoconstrictor and is clinically used for that purpose, particularly in the eye, ear, nose, and throat. It also has powerful central nervous system effects similar to the amphetamines and is a drug of abuse. Cocaine, like amphetamines, acts by multiple mechanisms on brain catecholaminergic neurons; the mechanism of its reinforcing effects is thought to involve inhibition of dopamine uptake.
