OBJECTIVE To evaluate topographic findings, manifest refraction in keratoconic cases, and compare those parameters with respect to age and gender. METHODS Four hundred eighty-two eyes of 248 patients (153 male and 95 female) with keratoconus were separated into 3 groups based on their ages (group 1: <21 years, group 2: 21-40 years, group 3: >40 years). Groups 1, 2, and 3 included 83, 362, and 37 eyes, respectively. All patients underwent full ocular examination and Pentacam (Oculus Optikgerate GmbH) measurement. K values (mean, steepest, and flattest), and central corneal thickness using Pentacam, and manifest refraction were analyzed by comparing the results with respect to patients' gender and ages. RESULTS The distribution ratios of keratoconic eyes in younger, middle, and older age groups were 17.2%, 75.3%, and 7.5%, respectively, and the distribution ratios of those of patients according to their genders were 37.8% for women and 62.2% for men. CONCLUSIONS The present study demonstrates a clear inverse correlation between age and severity of keratoconus.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007640 Keratoconus A noninflammatory, usually bilateral protrusion and thinning of the CORNEA, the apex being displaced downward and nasally. It occurs most commonly in females at about puberty. Two closely related noninflammatory corneal ectasias are pellucid marginal degeneration and keratoglobus. D006801 Humans Members of the species Homo sapiens. Homo sapiens,Man (Taxonomy),Human,Man, Modern,Modern Man
D000328 Adult A person having attained full growth or maturity. Adults are of 19 through 44 years of age. For a person between 19 and 24 years of age, YOUNG ADULT is available. Adults
D012720 Severity of Illness Index Levels within a diagnostic group which are established by various measurement criteria applied to the seriousness of a patient's disorder. Illness Index Severities,Illness Index Severity
D017677 Age Distribution The frequency of different ages or age groups in a given population. The distribution may refer to either how many or what proportion of the group. The population is usually patients with a specific disease but the concept is not restricted to humans and is not restricted to medicine. Age Distributions,Distribution, Age,Distributions, Age
D017678 Sex Distribution The number of males and females in a given population. The distribution may refer to how many men or women or what proportion of either in the group. D019781 Corneal Topography The measurement of curvature and shape of the anterior surface of the cornea using techniques such as keratometry, keratoscopy, photokeratoscopy, profile photography, computer-assisted image processing and videokeratography. This measurement is often applied in the fitting of contact lenses and in diagnosing corneal diseases or corneal changes including keratoconus, which occur after keratotomy and keratoplasty.
