Preoperative continuous intra-arterial chemotherapy combined with surgery in the treatment of malignant soft tissue tumors has been used since 1971 in our clinic. We treated thirty-eight patients, and twenty-five of them underwent preoperative intra-arterial chemotherapy and surgery. The diagnoses were liposarcoma (5), synovial sarcoma (4), rhabdomyosarcoma (2), angiosarcoma (2), malignant schwannoma (2), malignant lymphoma (2) and 8 other types of tumors. From the standpoint of local failures, there was only one recurrent case. Eighteen patients are alive now without evidence of disease. The 10-year cumulative survival rate for cases treated with intra-arterial chemotherapy was 69.5%, as compared with 24.9% of cases without intra-arterial chemotherapy. Therefore we conclude that preoperative continuous intra-arterial chemotherapy is a very effective method in the treatment of malignant soft tissue tumors.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007261 Infusions, Intra-Arterial Regional infusion of drugs via an arterial catheter. Often a pump is used to impel the drug through the catheter. Used in therapy of cancer, upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage, infection, and peripheral vascular disease. D008875 Middle Aged An adult aged 45 - 64 years. Middle Age
D008937 Mitomycins A group of methylazirinopyrroloindolediones obtained from certain Streptomyces strains. They are very toxic antibiotics used as ANTINEOPLASTIC AGENTS in some solid tumors. PORFIROMYCIN and MITOMYCIN are the most useful members of the group.
D011300 Preoperative Care Care given during the period prior to undergoing surgery when psychological and physical preparations are made according to the special needs of the individual patient. This period spans the time between admission to the hospital to the time the surgery begins. D011379 Prognosis A prediction of the probable outcome of a disease based on a individual's condition and the usual course of the disease as seen in similar situations. Prognostic Factor,Prognostic Factors,Factor, Prognostic,Factors, Prognostic,Prognoses
D002404 Catheterization Use or insertion of a tubular device into a duct, blood vessel, hollow organ, or body cavity for injecting or withdrawing fluids for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes. It differs from INTUBATION in that the tube here is used to restore or maintain patency in obstructions. Cannulation,Cannulations,Catheterizations
D002945 Cisplatin An inorganic and water-soluble platinum complex. After undergoing hydrolysis, it reacts with DNA to produce both intra and interstrand crosslinks. These crosslinks appear to impair replication and transcription of DNA. The cytotoxicity of cisplatin correlates with cellular arrest in the G2 phase of the cell cycle. D003131 Combined Modality Therapy The treatment of a disease or condition by several different means simultaneously or sequentially. Chemoimmunotherapy, RADIOIMMUNOTHERAPY, chemoradiotherapy, cryochemotherapy, and SALVAGE THERAPY are seen most frequently, but their combinations with each other and surgery are also used.
