[On the biologic phenomenon of epidermotropism (author's transl)]. 1977

H Bardach

The biologic phenomenon of epidermotropism is mirrored in the dynamic equilibrium between different cell types within the epidermis. In various pathological conditions, this balance may be upset, or foreign epithelial, neuroectodermal and mesenchymal tissue may selectively infiltrate epidermal or other epithelial structures. The importance of the concept of epidermal symbiosis in these conditions and resulting similarities in the clinical picture and biologic behavior are pointed out.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D009182 Mycosis Fungoides A chronic, malignant T-cell lymphoma of the skin. In the late stages, the LYMPH NODES and viscera are affected.
D010144 Paget's Disease, Mammary An intraductal in situ carcinoma of the breast, characterized clinically by eczema-like inflammatory skin changes and histologically by infiltration of the dermis by malignant cells (Paget's cells). D010145 Paget Disease, Extramammary A rare cutaneous neoplasm that occurs in the elderly. It develops more frequently in women and predominantly involves apocrine gland-bearing areas, especially the vulva, scrotum, and perianal areas. The lesions develop as erythematous scaly patches that progress to crusted, pruritic, erythematous plaques. The clinical differential diagnosis includes squamous cell carcinoma in situ and superficial fungal infection. It is generally thought to be an adenocarcinoma of the epidermis, from which it extends into the contiguous epithelium of hair follicles and eccrine sweat ducts.
