The authors present a review of Swanson's trapezium implants used in the surgical treatment of arthrosis of the basal joint of the thumb. 32 patients operated between 1970 and 1979 were invited to consultation, and 22 were examined again after an average period of 9.8 years. The clinical findings seemed to be good, with satisfactory subjective results in 95 per cent of all cases. On the contrary, radiographs showed 50 per cent of luxations and subluxations, and implant wear in 70 per cent of cases, increasing with time. In 39 per cent of cases, intracarpal cavities secondary to an adverse reaction to the silicon implant were noted. However, no second operation was needed. In spite of the good clinical results, the authors reserve Swanson's implants, considering the radiological findings, to subjects older than 65 years, because of the risks of long-term intolerance. Trapezectomy seems to be preferable in younger patients.

D008662 Metacarpophalangeal Joint The articulation between a metacarpal bone and a phalanx. Joint, Metacarpophalangeal,Joints, Metacarpophalangeal,Metacarpophalangeal Joints
D008875 Middle Aged An adult aged 45 - 64 years. Middle Age
D010003 Osteoarthritis A progressive, degenerative joint disease, the most common form of arthritis, especially in older persons. The disease is thought to result not from the aging process but from biochemical changes and biomechanical stresses affecting articular cartilage. In the foreign literature it is often called osteoarthrosis deformans. D006801 Humans Members of the species Homo sapiens. Homo sapiens,Man (Taxonomy),Human,Man, Modern,Modern Man
D012189 Retrospective Studies Studies used to test etiologic hypotheses in which inferences about an exposure to putative causal factors are derived from data relating to characteristics of persons under study or to events or experiences in their past. The essential feature is that some of the persons under study have the disease or outcome of interest and their characteristics are compared with those of unaffected persons. D012826 Silicone Elastomers Polymers of silicone that are formed by crosslinking and treatment with amorphous silica to increase strength. They have properties similar to vulcanized natural rubber, in that they stretch under tension, retract rapidly, and fully recover to their original dimensions upon release. They are used in the encapsulation of surgical membranes and implants. Elastomers, Silicone,Rubber Silicone,Silicone Rubber,Elastosil,Microfil,SE-30,Elastosils,Microfils,SE 30,SE30,Silicone Elastomer
D012828 Silicones A broad family of synthetic organosiloxane polymers containing a repeating silicon-oxygen backbone with organic side groups attached via carbon-silicon bonds. Depending on their structure, they are classified as liquids, gels, and elastomers. (From Merck Index, 12th ed) Silicone
