Acalculous cholecystitis is a very rare complication in severely burned patients. The correlation between acalculous cholecystitis and the development of a protracted pulmonary failure is demonstrated in 5 patients. Marked improvement of pulmonary function was achieved by cholecystectomy in all patients.
