Reproducibility of yields of foot--and--mouth disease virus from BHK monolayer and suspension cells. 1976

R E Spier

The production of FMD virus from BHK 21 C13 monolayer and suspension cells was examined under standardized conditions and in different systems. The yields of virus from suspension cells did not significantly exceed the yield from monolayer cells, whereas the monolayer cell was capable of producing virus from some strains of FMD virus which would not grow in suspension cells. When different production systems were examined, the scale of operation did not significantly influence the yield of virus from suspension cells, while the plastic spiral film propagator produced significantly less virus than the other monolayer systems examined. The use of unit monolayer systems on the large scale is discussed.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D002478 Cells, Cultured Cells propagated in vitro in special media conducive to their growth. Cultured cells are used to study developmental, morphologic, metabolic, physiologic, and genetic processes, among others. Cultured Cells,Cell, Cultured,Cultured Cell
D003470 Culture Media Any liquid or solid preparation made specifically for the growth, storage, or transport of microorganisms or other types of cells. The variety of media that exist allow for the culturing of specific microorganisms and cell types, such as differential media, selective media, test media, and defined media. Solid media consist of liquid media that have been solidified with an agent such as AGAR or GELATIN. Media, Culture
D005537 Aphthovirus A genus of the family PICORNAVIRIDAE infecting mainly cloven-hoofed animals. They cause vesicular lesions and upper respiratory tract infections. FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE VIRUS is the type species. Equine rhinitis A virus,Equine rhinovirus 1,Aphthoviruses
