Clinical, histopathological, and biochemical findings in Fabry's disease. A case report and family study. 1977

M Savi, and G Olivetti, and T M Neri, and C Curtoni

An extensive enzymatic and morphological study was performed in a 38-year-old patient with Fabry's disease (FD). The quantitative evaluation of the enzyme alpha-galactosidase was shown to be important in identifying the genetic distribution of FD in the family tree of the patient under study. An enzymatic activity less than 0.5 nanomole/hr/10(6) cells and ranging from 2.2 to 1.1 nanomoles/hr/10(6) cells was found in the affected males and the heterozygous females, respectively. alpha-galactosidase activity in the patient's leukocytes correlates well with the histopathological findings of the kidney and skin biopsy specimens, thus demonstrating the need for both of these special examinations for a correct diagnosis of FD.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007678 Kidney Glomerulus A cluster of convoluted capillaries beginning at each nephric tubule in the kidney and held together by connective tissue. Glomerulus, Kidney
D007684 Kidney Tubules Long convoluted tubules in the nephrons. They collect filtrate from blood passing through the KIDNEY GLOMERULUS and process this filtrate into URINE. Each renal tubule consists of a BOWMAN CAPSULE; PROXIMAL KIDNEY TUBULE; LOOP OF HENLE; DISTAL KIDNEY TUBULE; and KIDNEY COLLECTING DUCT leading to the central cavity of the kidney (KIDNEY PELVIS) that connects to the URETER. D007962 Leukocytes White blood cells. These include granular leukocytes (BASOPHILS; EOSINOPHILS; and NEUTROPHILS) as well as non-granular leukocytes (LYMPHOCYTES and MONOCYTES). D002479 Inclusion Bodies A generic term for any circumscribed mass of foreign (e.g., lead or viruses) or metabolically inactive materials (e.g., ceroid or MALLORY BODIES), within the cytoplasm or nucleus of a cell. Inclusion bodies are in cells infected with certain filtrable viruses, observed especially in nerve, epithelial, or endothelial cells. D005696 Galactosidases A family of galactoside hydrolases that hydrolyze compounds with an O-galactosyl linkage. EC 3.2.1.-. Galactosidase
D006801 Humans Members of the species Homo sapiens. Homo sapiens,Man (Taxonomy),Human,Man, Modern,Modern Man
D000328 Adult A person having attained full growth or maturity. Adults are of 19 through 44 years of age. For a person between 19 and 24 years of age, YOUNG ADULT is available. Adults
