During the construction period of a saltpeter plant from 1928 through 1929, 21 young men of equal age were heavily exposed to asbestos dust for 1 a. During an observation period from 1 January 1943 to 30 June 1980 three cases of lung cancer and two cases of mesothelioma were observed in the cohort. The number of lung cancers to be expected was 0.21. Radiographic changes associated with asbestos exposure were present in 17 of the 18 available chest radiographs.

D008654 Mesothelioma A tumor derived from mesothelial tissue (peritoneum, pleura, pericardium). It appears as broad sheets of cells, with some regions containing spindle-shaped, sarcoma-like cells and other regions showing adenomatous patterns. Pleural mesotheliomas have been linked to exposure to asbestos. (Dorland, 27th ed) Mesotheliomas

D001194 Asbestos Asbestos. Fibrous incombustible mineral composed of magnesium and calcium silicates with or without other elements. It is relatively inert chemically and used in thermal insulation and fireproofing. Inhalation of dust causes asbestosis and later lung and gastrointestinal neoplasms.
D015994 Incidence The number of new cases of a given disease during a given period in a specified population. It also is used for the rate at which new events occur in a defined population. It is differentiated from PREVALENCE, which refers to all cases in the population at a given time.
