Retinal detachment as a complication of retrobulbar anesthesia. 1991

Department of Ophthalmology, Cleveland Clinic Foundation.

The authors report an unusual case of retinal detachment after cataract surgery in a 48-year-old man in which it appeared that the retrobulbar needle passed through the sclera and tracked beneath the retina before perforating the retina superior to the disc. The cause of the detachment was not clearly defined until a depigmented line was observed after reattachment of the retina.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008028 Light Coagulation The coagulation of tissue by an intense beam of light, including laser (LASER COAGULATION). In the eye it is used in the treatment of retinal detachments, retinal holes, aneurysms, hemorrhages, and malignant and benign neoplasms. (Dictionary of Visual Science, 3d ed) Photocoagulation,Coagulation, Light,Coagulations, Light,Light Coagulations,Photocoagulations
D008297 Male Males
D008875 Middle Aged An adult aged 45 - 64 years. Middle Age
D012163 Retinal Detachment Separation of the inner layers of the retina (neural retina) from the pigment epithelium. Retinal detachment occurs more commonly in men than in women, in eyes with degenerative myopia, in aging and in aphakia. It may occur after an uncomplicated cataract extraction, but it is seen more often if vitreous humor has been lost during surgery. D002387 Cataract Extraction The removal of a cataractous CRYSTALLINE LENS from the eye. Enzymatic Zonulolysis,Phakectomy,Cataract Extractions,Enzymatic Zonulolyses,Extraction, Cataract,Extractions, Cataract,Phakectomies,Zonulolyses, Enzymatic,Zonulolysis, Enzymatic
D005654 Fundus Oculi The concave interior of the eye, consisting of the retina, the choroid, the sclera, the optic disk, and blood vessels, seen by means of the ophthalmoscope. (Cline et al., Dictionary of Visual Science, 4th ed) Fundus of the Eye,Ocular Fundus,Fundus, Ocular
D006801 Humans Members of the species Homo sapiens. Homo sapiens,Man (Taxonomy),Human,Man, Modern,Modern Man
D000772 Anesthesia, Local A blocking of nerve conduction to a specific area by an injection of an anesthetic agent. Anesthesia, Infiltration,Local Anesthesia,Neural Therapy of Huneke,Huneke Neural Therapy,Infiltration Anesthesia
D012591 Scleral Buckling An operation for retinal detachment which reduces the size of the globe by indenting the sclera so that it approximates the retina. Buckling, Scleral,Bucklings, Scleral,Scleral Bucklings
D014792 Visual Acuity Clarity or sharpness of OCULAR VISION or the ability of the eye to see fine details. Visual acuity depends on the functions of RETINA, neuronal transmission, and the interpretative ability of the brain. Normal visual acuity is expressed as 20/20 indicating that one can see at 20 feet what should normally be seen at that distance. Visual acuity can also be influenced by brightness, color, and contrast. Acuities, Visual,Acuity, Visual,Visual Acuities
