Hypertension has long been considered to be a disease of the arterioles but it also concerns the great arteries. The hypothesis for this study was that the antihypertensive agents used in the large multicenter trials only partially correct the hemodynamic abnormalities of hypertension. The regression of the structural arterial changes responsible for the decreased arterial compliance, the regression of left ventricular hypertrophy without alteration of systolic function, the decrease in the variability of the blood pressure and the maintenance of regional blood flow should also be considered as therapeutic objectives for vasodilator antihypertensive therapy.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D006973 Hypertension Persistently high systemic arterial BLOOD PRESSURE. Based on multiple readings (BLOOD PRESSURE DETERMINATION), hypertension is currently defined as when SYSTOLIC PRESSURE is consistently greater than 140 mm Hg or when DIASTOLIC PRESSURE is consistently 90 mm Hg or more. Blood Pressure, High,Blood Pressures, High,High Blood Pressure,High Blood Pressures
D006801 Humans Members of the species Homo sapiens. Homo sapiens,Man (Taxonomy),Human,Man, Modern,Modern Man
D001158 Arteries The vessels carrying blood away from the heart. Artery
D014655 Vascular Resistance The force that opposes the flow of BLOOD through a vascular bed. It is equal to the difference in BLOOD PRESSURE across the vascular bed divided by the CARDIAC OUTPUT. Peripheral Resistance,Total Peripheral Resistance,Pulmonary Vascular Resistance,Systemic Vascular Resistance,Peripheral Resistance, Total,Resistance, Peripheral,Resistance, Pulmonary Vascular,Resistance, Systemic Vascular,Resistance, Total Peripheral,Resistance, Vascular,Vascular Resistance, Pulmonary,Vascular Resistance, Systemic
D014664 Vasodilation The physiological widening of BLOOD VESSELS by relaxing the underlying VASCULAR SMOOTH MUSCLE. Vasodilatation,Vasorelaxation,Vascular Endothelium-Dependent Relaxation,Endothelium-Dependent Relaxation, Vascular,Relaxation, Vascular Endothelium-Dependent,Vascular Endothelium Dependent Relaxation
D014666 Vasomotor System The neural systems which act on VASCULAR SMOOTH MUSCLE to control blood vessel diameter. The major neural control is through the sympathetic nervous system. System, Vasomotor,Systems, Vasomotor,Vasomotor Systems
