Among the biologically active compounds isolated from medicinal plants are polyamine derivatives that show antihypertensive or antitumour activity. We have used previously available reagents to modify selectively spermidine, homospermidine and spermine backbones. Chemical synthesis of several naturally occurring derivatives has been achieved by simple, efficient procedures that can be used to produce high yields. This has facilitated evaluation of the structure-activity relationships of polyamines.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D011073 Polyamines Amine compounds that consist of carbon chains or rings containing two or more primary amino groups. Polyamine
D011743 Pyrimidines A family of 6-membered heterocyclic compounds occurring in nature in a wide variety of forms. They include several nucleic acid constituents (CYTOSINE; THYMINE; and URACIL) and form the basic structure of the barbiturates.
D012991 Solanaceous Alkaloids Alkaloids, mainly tropanes, elaborated by plants of the family Solanaceae, including Atropa, Hyoscyamus, Mandragora, Nicotiana, Solanum, etc. Some act as cholinergic antagonists; most are very toxic; many are used medicinally. Solanum Alkaloids,Alkaloids, Solanaceous,Alkaloids, Solanum
D013095 Spermidine A polyamine formed from putrescine. It is found in almost all tissues in association with nucleic acids. It is found as a cation at all pH values, and is thought to help stabilize some membranes and nucleic acid structures. It is a precursor of spermine.
