Department of Ophthalmology, Fujita Gakuen Health University, Toyoake, Japan.

Specular microscopic investigation was conducted on 5 cases with the diagnosis compatible with posterior corneal vesicles. Endothelial cells were considerably enlarged with a more or less indistinct margin. Deposits onto endothelial cells were occasionally seen. The results of specular microscopy suggest that posterior corneal vesicles be classified as a nonfamilial, unilateral variant of posterior polymorphous dystrophy of the cornea.

D008853 Microscopy The use of instrumentation and techniques for visualizing material and details that cannot be seen by the unaided eye. It is usually done by enlarging images, transmitted by light or electron beams, with optical or magnetic lenses that magnify the entire image field. With scanning microscopy, images are generated by collecting output from the specimen in a point-by-point fashion, on a magnified scale, as it is scanned by a narrow beam of light or electrons, a laser, a conductive probe, or a topographical probe. D003317 Corneal Dystrophies, Hereditary Bilateral hereditary disorders of the cornea, usually autosomal dominant, which may be present at birth but more frequently develop during adolescence and progress slowly throughout life.
