Of the 90 strains of Enterococcus spp. isolated in an Argentine laboratory in the period from January to July 1989, three were identified as beta-lactamase-producing Enterococcus faecalis. According to the literature reviewed, these appear to be the first beta-lactamase-positive strains of Enterococcus isolated outside the USA. They differed from most beta-lactamase-producing strains already described in that they were susceptible to low concentrations of macrolides. All three strains were resistant to high concentrations of aminoglycosides.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D004352 Drug Resistance, Microbial The ability of microorganisms, especially bacteria, to resist or to become tolerant to chemotherapeutic agents, antimicrobial agents, or antibiotics. This resistance may be acquired through gene mutation or foreign DNA in transmissible plasmids (R FACTORS). D001118 Argentina Country located in southern South America, bordering the South Atlantic Ocean, between Chile and Uruguay.
D001618 beta-Lactamases Enzymes found in many bacteria which catalyze the hydrolysis of the amide bond in the beta-lactam ring. Well known antibiotics destroyed by these enzymes are penicillins and cephalosporins. beta-Lactamase,beta Lactamase, beta Lactamases
D013293 Enterococcus faecalis A species of gram-positive, coccoid bacteria commonly isolated from clinical specimens and the human intestinal tract. Most strains are nonhemolytic. Streptococcus Group D,Streptococcus faecalis
