[Detection of individuals within a group of risk for meningococcal infection morbidity in organized collectives]. 1990

E I Efimov, and M V Dulatora, and V F Pospelov

The survey of 2,500 persons in different educational organized groups has been carried out by the method based on the study of changes occurring in the standard population of group A meningococci due to its interaction with the surviving culture of human leukocytes. The heterogeneity of humans with regard to the individual antimeningococcal activity of their blood irrespective of their levels of humoral immunity and complement activity has been revealed. The survey has shown the possibility of detecting the groups of risk among the members of organized groups having, according to our data, a significantly higher level of morbidity in generalized meningococcal infection and meningococcal carriership (including epidemiologically important groups A, B and C).

D009345 Neisseria meningitidis A species of gram-negative, aerobic BACTERIA. It is a commensal and pathogen only of humans, and can be carried asymptomatically in the NASOPHARYNX. When found in cerebrospinal fluid it is the causative agent of cerebrospinal meningitis (MENINGITIS, MENINGOCOCCAL). It is also found in venereal discharges and blood. There are at least 13 serogroups based on antigenic differences in the capsular polysaccharides; the ones causing most meningitis infections being A, B, C, Y, and W-135. Each serogroup can be further classified by serotype, serosubtype, and immunotype. D001770 Blood Bactericidal Activity The natural bactericidal property of BLOOD due to normally occurring antibacterial substances such as beta lysin, leukin, etc. This activity needs to be distinguished from the bactericidal activity contained in a patient's serum as a result of antimicrobial therapy, which is measured by a SERUM BACTERICIDAL TEST.
