Department of Restorative Dentistry, School of Dentistry, University of California, San Francisco.

The status of casting alloys is presented with regard to metallurgical considerations, clinical properties, sales, and evolution of alloys from a historic perspective. Alloys are classified on the basis of 1) normal-fusing (non-porcelain bonding); and 2) high-fusing (porcelain bonding) and on nobility within these two groups. Part I of this two-part series details normal-fusing alloys. High-fusing alloys will be discussed in Part II.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008669 Metallurgy The science, art, or technology dealing with processes involved in the separation of metals from their ores, the technique of making or compounding the alloys, the techniques of working or heat-treating metals, and the mining of metals. It includes industrial metallurgy as well as metallurgical techniques employed in the preparation and working of metals used in dentistry, with special reference to orthodontic and prosthodontic appliances.
