OBJECTIVE Several studies demonstrated a link between ABCB1 gene variants and the response to treatment in epilepsy, but the results have been inconclusive. Here, we performed the first haplotype meta-analysis to examine the association of haplotypes of ABCB1 common variants with the response to treatment in epilepsy. METHODS We meta-analyzed the studies that evaluated the role of ABCB1 C1236T, G2677T/A and C3435T polymorphisms and their haplotypes in the response to treatment. RESULTS Meta-analysis of 23 studies (7067 patients) showed no significant association of ABCB1 alleles, genotypes and haplotypes with the response to treatment in the overall population or in each ethnicity subgroup. CONCLUSIONS Our data suggest that the haplotypes of these loci may not be involved in the response to treatment.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D011110 Polymorphism, Genetic The regular and simultaneous occurrence in a single interbreeding population of two or more discontinuous genotypes. The concept includes differences in genotypes ranging in size from a single nucleotide site (POLYMORPHISM, SINGLE NUCLEOTIDE) to large nucleotide sequences visible at a chromosomal level. D004827 Epilepsy A disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of paroxysmal brain dysfunction due to a sudden, disorderly, and excessive neuronal discharge. Epilepsy classification systems are generally based upon: (1) clinical features of the seizure episodes (e.g., motor seizure), (2) etiology (e.g., post-traumatic), (3) anatomic site of seizure origin (e.g., frontal lobe seizure), (4) tendency to spread to other structures in the brain, and (5) temporal patterns (e.g., nocturnal epilepsy). D006239 Haplotypes The genetic constitution of individuals with respect to one member of a pair of allelic genes, or sets of genes that are closely linked and tend to be inherited together such as those of the MAJOR HISTOCOMPATIBILITY COMPLEX. Haplotype
