Control of regional circulations by the sino-aortic reflexes during desynchronised sleep in the cat. 1978

G Baccelli, and R Albertini, and G Mancia, and A Zanchetti

In the intact cat desynchronised sleep induces arterial hypotension and mesenteric vasodilatation, whereas in limb muscles vasoconstriction occurs because of the concurrent action of a spinal vasoconstriction reflex. After sino-aortic denervation arterial hypotension is exaggerated and mesenteric vasodilatation is greater, while the muscular bed of the limbs also becomes vasodilated rather than constricted. It is concluded that during desynchronised sleep the sino-aortic afferents act to check a central influence inhibiting vasoconstrictor tone both in the viscera and muscles: thus an excessive fall in blood pressure is prevented by avoiding a too large visceral vasodilatation and by unmasking the vasoconstrictor action of the spinal reflex in the limbs.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D012018 Reflex An involuntary movement or exercise of function in a part, excited in response to a stimulus applied to the periphery and transmitted to the brain or spinal cord.
D012039 Regional Blood Flow The flow of BLOOD through or around an organ or region of the body. Blood Flow, Regional,Blood Flows, Regional,Flow, Regional Blood,Flows, Regional Blood,Regional Blood Flows
D001775 Blood Circulation The movement of the BLOOD as it is pumped through the CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM. Blood Flow,Circulation, Blood,Blood Flows,Flow, Blood
D002346 Carotid Sinus The dilated portion of the common carotid artery at its bifurcation into external and internal carotids. It contains baroreceptors which, when stimulated, cause slowing of the heart, vasodilatation, and a fall in blood pressure. Sinus, Carotid
D002415 Cats The domestic cat, Felis catus, of the carnivore family FELIDAE, comprising over 30 different breeds. The domestic cat is descended primarily from the wild cat of Africa and extreme southwestern Asia. Though probably present in towns in Palestine as long ago as 7000 years, actual domestication occurred in Egypt about 4000 years ago. D005121 Extremities The farthest or outermost projections of the body, such as the HAND and FOOT. Limbs,Extremity,Limb
D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA. D001011 Aorta The main trunk of the systemic arteries. Aortas
D012895 Sleep, REM A stage of sleep characterized by rapid movements of the eye and low voltage fast pattern EEG. It is usually associated with dreaming.
