Typical and atypical carcinoid tumors of lung: a clinicopathologic and DNA analysis of 20 tumors. 1990

Twelve typical carcinoid tumors (TCT) and eight atypical (malignant) carcinoid tumors (ACT) of the lung were studied for quantitative DNA content by image analysis in order to identify prognostic features. No correlation of any histologic variables of the TCTs and ACTs with abnormal DNA content were noted. Furthermore, it was concluded that although abnormalities of DNA content, particularly aneuploidy, are common in ACTs, DNA ploidy cannot be used independently to assess malignant potential.

D002276	Carcinoid Tumor	A usually small, slow-growing neoplasm composed of islands of rounded, oxyphilic, or spindle-shaped cells of medium size, with moderately small vesicular nuclei, and covered by intact mucosa with a yellow cut surface. The tumor can occur anywhere in the gastrointestinal tract (and in the lungs and other sites); approximately 90% arise in the appendix. It is now established that these tumors are of neuroendocrine origin and derive from a primitive stem cell.
