Pontine infarction manifesting as isolated cranial nerve palsies. 1979

C Bergeron, and N B Rewcastle, and J C Richardson

Isolated ipsilateral fifth, seventh, tenth and twelfth cranial nerve palsies in a 74-year-old woman were shown at autopsy to result from an inferior lateral pontine infarction. The clinical features and pathogenesis of this uncommon lesion are discussed.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D010243 Paralysis A general term most often used to describe severe or complete loss of muscle strength due to motor system disease from the level of the cerebral cortex to the muscle fiber. This term may also occasionally refer to a loss of sensory function. D011149 Pons The front part of the hindbrain (RHOMBENCEPHALON) that lies between the MEDULLA and the midbrain (MESENCEPHALON) ventral to the cerebellum. It is composed of two parts, the dorsal and the ventral. The pons serves as a relay station for neural pathways between the CEREBELLUM to the CEREBRUM. D002544 Cerebral Infarction The formation of an area of NECROSIS in the CEREBRUM caused by an insufficiency of arterial or venous blood flow. Infarcts of the cerebrum are generally classified by hemisphere (i.e., left vs. right), lobe (e.g., frontal lobe infarction), arterial distribution (e.g., INFARCTION, ANTERIOR CEREBRAL ARTERY), and etiology (e.g., embolic infarction).
