A "retable" in medieval churches was made up of a number of tables or carved panels which formed a screen behind the altar.The carvings usually consisted of a set of related religious images, such as scenes from the Passion or of the life of the Virgin Mary or John the Baptist. In Scotland few of these survived the Reformation in their original position and those that are known are usually fragments which have been found in the floors or walls of buildings, or in graveyards.
