[HLA and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (author's transl)]. 1979

J Seignalet, and J Cadilhac, and H Lapinski

52 patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and 300 normal subjects were tested for 33 HLA-A, B, C antigens. We did not observe any statistically significant difference in antigenic frequencies between the two groups. The absence of association with HLA in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a distinction with multiple sclerosis, which is associated with several HLA antigens.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D006680 HLA Antigens Antigens determined by leukocyte loci found on chromosome 6, the major histocompatibility loci in humans. They are polypeptides or glycoproteins found on most nucleated cells and platelets, determine tissue types for transplantation, and are associated with certain diseases. D000690 Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis A degenerative disorder affecting upper MOTOR NEURONS in the brain and lower motor neurons in the brain stem and SPINAL CORD. Disease onset is usually after the age of 50 and the process is usually fatal within 3 to 6 years. Clinical manifestations include progressive weakness, atrophy, FASCICULATION, hyperreflexia, DYSARTHRIA, dysphagia, and eventual paralysis of respiratory function. Pathologic features include the replacement of motor neurons with fibrous ASTROCYTES and atrophy of anterior SPINAL NERVE ROOTS and corticospinal tracts.
