OBJECTIVE The broad availability and use of multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) in recent years has increased the radiation dose for patients. METHODS Multiphase MDCT protocols are used in abdominal imaging for various indications. METHODS Dose reduction though novel technologies, such as dual energy CT or adapted contrast injection protocols (split bolus etc.) for reduction of scans. CONCLUSIONS An optimized dose reduction can be achieved by using strict protocols which are adapted to the clinical situation of the patient.
