Volunteers have played an important role in the care and support of PWAs. This paper discusses the issues that will face professionals who are involved in recruitment, training and support of volunteer caregivers in the coming years, utilizing a review of the literature and case examples. The hospice volunteer model is discussed and serves as the basis for a proposed model of training and support specifically designed for volunteer caregivers of PWAs.
