The structure of Klebsiella serotype II capsular polysaccharide. 1975

H Thurow, and Y M Choy, and N Frank, and H Niemann, and S Stirm

Using periodate oxidation, methylation analysis, the characterization of oligosaccharides obtained by partial acid hydrolysis, p.m.r. spectroscopy, and analytical ultracentrifugation, the structure of the (mildly alkali-treated) Klebsiella serotype 11 capusular polysaccharide has been elucidated. The tetrasaccharide repeating-unit comprises the sequence yields 3)-beta-D-Glcp-(1 yields 3)-beta-D-GlcUAp-(1 yields 3)-alpha-D-Galp-(1 yields with a 4,6-O-(1-carboxyethylidene)-alpha-D-galactosyl residue linked to O-4 of the glucuronic acid residue. The structural basis for some serological cross-reactions of the Klebseilla K11 antigen is discussed, and it is shown that rabbit antisera against the Klebsiella K11 test-strain predominantly contain K agglutinins specific for branch-terminal 4,6-O-(1-carboxyethylidene)-D-galactose.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007709 Klebsiella A genus of gram-negative, facultatively anaerobic, rod-shaped bacteria whose organisms arrange singly, in pairs, or short chains. This genus is commonly found in the intestinal tract and is an opportunistic pathogen that can give rise to bacteremia, pneumonia, urinary tract and several other types of human infection.
D008745 Methylation Addition of methyl groups. In histo-chemistry methylation is used to esterify carboxyl groups and remove sulfate groups by treating tissue sections with hot methanol in the presence of hydrochloric acid. (From Stedman, 25th ed) Methylations
D008968 Molecular Conformation The characteristic three-dimensional shape of a molecule. D008970 Molecular Weight The sum of the weight of all the atoms in a molecule. Molecular Weights,Weight, Molecular,Weights, Molecular
D009682 Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy Spectroscopic method of measuring the magnetic moment of elementary particles such as atomic nuclei, protons or electrons. It is employed in clinical applications such as NMR Tomography (MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING). D010084 Oxidation-Reduction A chemical reaction in which an electron is transferred from one molecule to another. The electron-donating molecule is the reducing agent or reductant; the electron-accepting molecule is the oxidizing agent or oxidant. Reducing and oxidizing agents function as conjugate reductant-oxidant pairs or redox pairs (Lehninger, Principles of Biochemistry, 1982, p471). Redox,Oxidation Reduction
D010504 Periodic Acid A strong oxidizing agent. Paraperiodic Acid,Periodic Acid (HIO4),Periodic Acids,Acid, Paraperiodic,Acid, Periodic,Acids, Periodic
D011135 Polysaccharides, Bacterial Polysaccharides found in bacteria and in capsules thereof. Bacterial Polysaccharides
D011817 Rabbits A burrowing plant-eating mammal with hind limbs that are longer than its fore limbs. It belongs to the family Leporidae of the order Lagomorpha, and in contrast to hares, possesses 22 instead of 24 pairs of chromosomes.
