The enzyme activities of S-adenosylhomocysteine hydrolase, adenosine deaminase and pyruvate kinase were determined in normal human erythrocytes subpopulations of different ages separated by centrifugation on a discontinuous Percoll:NaCl density gradient. The levels of S-adenosylhomocysteine hydrolase activity were found to undergo a sharp decrease with red cell ageing. Adenosine deaminase activities were, however, less critically dependent on erythrocyte age.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D009700 Nucleoside Deaminases Catalyze the hydrolysis of nucleosides with the elimination of ammonia. Deaminases, Nucleoside
D011770 Pyruvate Kinase ATP:pyruvate 2-O-phosphotransferase. A phosphotransferase that catalyzes reversibly the phosphorylation of pyruvate to phosphoenolpyruvate in the presence of ATP. It has four isozymes (L, R, M1, and M2). Deficiency of the enzyme results in hemolytic anemia. EC 2.7.1.40. L-Type Pyruvate Kinase,M-Type Pyruvate Kinase,M1-Type Pyruvate Kinase,M2-Type Pyruvate Kinase,Pyruvate Kinase L,R-Type Pyruvate Kinase,L Type Pyruvate Kinase,M Type Pyruvate Kinase,M1 Type Pyruvate Kinase,M2 Type Pyruvate Kinase,Pyruvate Kinase, L-Type,Pyruvate Kinase, M-Type,Pyruvate Kinase, M1-Type,Pyruvate Kinase, M2-Type,Pyruvate Kinase, R-Type,R Type Pyruvate Kinase
D004905 Erythrocyte Aging The senescence of RED BLOOD CELLS. Lacking the organelles that make protein synthesis possible, the mature erythrocyte is incapable of self-repair, reproduction, and carrying out certain functions performed by other cells. This limits the average life span of an erythrocyte to 120 days. Erythrocyte Survival,Aging, Erythrocyte,Survival, Erythrocyte
D004912 Erythrocytes Red blood cells. Mature erythrocytes are non-nucleated, biconcave disks containing HEMOGLOBIN whose function is to transport OXYGEN. Blood Cells, Red,Blood Corpuscles, Red,Red Blood Cells,Red Blood Corpuscles,Blood Cell, Red,Blood Corpuscle, Red,Erythrocyte,Red Blood Cell,Red Blood Corpuscle
D006454 Hemoglobins The oxygen-carrying proteins of ERYTHROCYTES. They are found in all vertebrates and some invertebrates. The number of globin subunits in the hemoglobin quaternary structure differs between species. Structures range from monomeric to a variety of multimeric arrangements. Eryhem,Ferrous Hemoglobin,Hemoglobin,Hemoglobin, Ferrous
D006801 Humans Members of the species Homo sapiens. Homo sapiens,Man (Taxonomy),Human,Man, Modern,Modern Man
D006867 Hydrolases Any member of the class of enzymes that catalyze the cleavage of the substrate and the addition of water to the resulting molecules, e.g., ESTERASES, glycosidases (GLYCOSIDE HYDROLASES), lipases, NUCLEOTIDASES, peptidases (PEPTIDE HYDROLASES), and phosphatases (PHOSPHORIC MONOESTER HYDROLASES). EC 3. Hydrolase
D000243 Adenosine Deaminase An enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of ADENOSINE to INOSINE with the elimination of AMMONIA. Adenosine Aminohydrolase,Aminohydrolase, Adenosine,Deaminase, Adenosine
D043383 Adenosylhomocysteinase An enzyme which catalyzes the catabolism of S-ADENOSYLHOMOCYSTEINE to ADENOSINE and HOMOCYSTEINE. It may play a role in regulating the concentration of intracellular adenosylhomocysteine. S-adenosylhomocysteine Hydrolase,S-adenosylhomocysteine Synthase,SAH Hydrolase,Hydrolase, S-adenosylhomocysteine,S adenosylhomocysteine Hydrolase,S adenosylhomocysteine Synthase
