Autonomic functioning in alcoholics. A study of heart rate and skin conductance. 1975

B C Chandler, and O A Parsons, and A Vega

Heart rate and skin conductance levels and variability were measured in alcoholics and nonalcoholics during a demanding neuropsychological task. Alcoholics without possible brain damage had a more variable heart rate and were more highly aroused. In the alcoholics with possible brain damage a negative correlation between heart rate variability and performance decrement and an inverse relationship between heart rate and skin conductance variability were found.

D011939 Mental Recall The process whereby a representation of past experience is elicited. Recall, Mental
D012119 Respiration The act of breathing with the LUNGS, consisting of INHALATION, or the taking into the lungs of the ambient air, and of EXHALATION, or the expelling of the modified air which contains more CARBON DIOXIDE than the air taken in (Blakiston's Gould Medical Dictionary, 4th ed.). D012146 Rest Freedom from activity. Rests
D001930 Brain Injuries Acute and chronic (see also BRAIN INJURIES, CHRONIC) injuries to the brain, including the cerebral hemispheres, CEREBELLUM, and BRAIN STEM. Clinical manifestations depend on the nature of injury. Diffuse trauma to the brain is frequently associated with DIFFUSE AXONAL INJURY or COMA, POST-TRAUMATIC. Localized injuries may be associated with NEUROBEHAVIORAL MANIFESTATIONS; HEMIPARESIS, or other focal neurologic deficits. D000437 Alcoholism A primary, chronic disease with genetic, psychosocial, and environmental factors influencing its development and manifestations. The disease is often progressive and fatal. It is characterized by impaired control over drinking, preoccupation with the drug alcohol, use of alcohol despite adverse consequences, and distortions in thinking, most notably denial. Each of these symptoms may be continuous or periodic.
