Scanning electron microscopic exfoliative urinary cytology in patients with malignant and nonmalignant diseases of lower urinary tract. 1986

T Suzuki, and M Cano, and S M Cohen

The possible clinical usefulness of scanning electron microscopic observation of urinary cytologic specimens has been suggested for selected patient populations. To begin to determine the specificity and sensitivity of the procedure, cytologic specimens (48 catheterized urine and 49 bladder washings) from 85 patients with bladder tumor or nonmalignant urologic diseases were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and compared with observations by light microscopy. This study provides evidence that SEM exfoliative cytology in catheterized urine and/or bladder washings has considerable specificity for low-grade, low-stage bladder tumors, but may not be sufficiently sensitive for use in routine urologic practice. However, this procedure may be of use in following patients with previously resected low-grade, low-stage bladder tumors for the early detection of recurrences.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008297 Male Males
D008855 Microscopy, Electron, Scanning Microscopy in which the object is examined directly by an electron beam scanning the specimen point-by-point. The image is constructed by detecting the products of specimen interactions that are projected above the plane of the sample, such as backscattered electrons. Although SCANNING TRANSMISSION ELECTRON MICROSCOPY also scans the specimen point by point with the electron beam, the image is constructed by detecting the electrons, or their interaction products that are transmitted through the sample plane, so that is a form of TRANSMISSION ELECTRON MICROSCOPY. D011470 Prostatic Hyperplasia Increase in constituent cells in the PROSTATE, leading to enlargement of the organ (hypertrophy) and adverse impact on the lower urinary tract function. This can be caused by increased rate of cell proliferation, reduced rate of cell death, or both.
