[Hereditary drusen in Bruch's membrane]. 1987

B Cagianut, and K Theiler

The left eye of a 71-year-old patient who had suffered from choroiditis guttata was removed immediately after death by enucleation. Histopathological studies revealed numerous nodular (hard) drusen, a wide variety of senile alterations of the pigment epithelium and Bruch's membrane, and the presence of multiple corpora arenacea in the subarachnoid space of the optic nerve. A new hypothesis concerning the development of hereditary drusen is advanced, postulating a disturbance of the lysosomal enzyme/inhibitor balance.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D010857 Pigment Epithelium of Eye The layer of pigment-containing epithelial cells in the RETINA; the CILIARY BODY; and the IRIS in the eye. Eye Pigment Epithelium
D012160 Retina The ten-layered nervous tissue membrane of the eye. It is continuous with the OPTIC NERVE and receives images of external objects and transmits visual impulses to the brain. Its outer surface is in contact with the CHOROID and the inner surface with the VITREOUS BODY. The outer-most layer is pigmented, whereas the inner nine layers are transparent. Ora Serrata
D002829 Choroid The thin, highly vascular membrane covering most of the posterior of the eye between the RETINA and SCLERA. Choriocapillaris,Haller Layer,Haller's Layer,Sattler Layer,Sattler's Layer,Choroids
D002833 Choroiditis Inflammation of the choroid. Choroiditides
D002924 Ciliary Body A ring of tissue extending from the scleral spur to the ora serrata of the RETINA. It consists of the uveal portion and the epithelial portion. The ciliary muscle is in the uveal portion and the ciliary processes are in the epithelial portion. D003315 Cornea The transparent anterior portion of the fibrous coat of the eye consisting of five layers: stratified squamous CORNEAL EPITHELIUM; BOWMAN MEMBRANE; CORNEAL STROMA; DESCEMET MEMBRANE; and mesenchymal CORNEAL ENDOTHELIUM. It serves as the first refracting medium of the eye. It is structurally continuous with the SCLERA, avascular, receiving its nourishment by permeation through spaces between the lamellae, and is innervated by the ophthalmic division of the TRIGEMINAL NERVE via the ciliary nerves and those of the surrounding conjunctiva which together form plexuses. D005260 Female Females
D006801 Humans Members of the species Homo sapiens. Homo sapiens,Man (Taxonomy),Human,Man, Modern,Modern Man
D006818 Hyalin A clear, homogenous, structureless, eosinophilic substance occurring in pathological degeneration of tissues. Hyalin Substance,Hyaline,Hyaline Substance,Hyalins,Substance, Hyalin,Substance, Hyaline
D000368 Aged A person 65 years of age or older. For a person older than 79 years, AGED, 80 AND OVER is available. Elderly
