[Methods of determining lipid peroxidation products in the serum using a thiobarbituric acid test]. 1987

V B Gavrilov, and A R Gavrilova, and L M Mazhul'

Main principles for carrying out of the thiobarbituric acid (TBA)-test of blood serum were characterized. These principles involved incubation of the sample at pH 1.3-1.6, extraction of the reaction products with butanol and spectrofluorimetric or spectrophotometric estimation. Content of TBA-active products in blood serum of healthy donors constituted 3.86 +/- 0.66 nmol malonic dialdehyde per ml of blood serum as shown in fluorimetric estimation by means of the procedure developed.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008054 Lipid Peroxides Peroxides produced in the presence of a free radical by the oxidation of unsaturated fatty acids in the cell in the presence of molecular oxygen. The formation of lipid peroxides results in the destruction of the original lipid leading to the loss of integrity of the membranes. They therefore cause a variety of toxic effects in vivo and their formation is considered a pathological process in biological systems. Their formation can be inhibited by antioxidants, such as vitamin E, structural separation or low oxygen tension.
