OBJECTIVE To investigate the feasibility of endoscopic ablation of the gallbladder mucosa after cholecystostomy. METHODS The mucosa of the gallbladder was endoscopically electrocoagulated through the cholecystostomy tract. After ablation, repeated luminal irrigation with chymotrypsin solution was given before removal of the tube. The patients were followed up by ultrasonography after the procedure. RESULTS Twenty patients accepted this operation. The mean operating time was 38 minutes (range, 25 to 55 min). There were no procedure-related mortality and complications including perforation, bleeding, and cholangitis. Eighteen gallbladders have completely obliterated in 3 months. The other 2 gallbladders developed asymptomatic retention cysts. During 48 months of follow-up period, no stone occurred and no signs of malignancy were found at the site of the gallbladder. Seven patients died from the other medical illness. CONCLUSIONS Resectoscopic ablation of the gallbladder mucosa is a safe and promising approach to sclerosis of the gallbladder after cholecystostomy.

D008875 Middle Aged An adult aged 45 - 64 years. Middle Age
D009092 Mucous Membrane An EPITHELIUM with MUCUS-secreting cells, such as GOBLET CELLS. It forms the lining of many body cavities, such as the DIGESTIVE TRACT, the RESPIRATORY TRACT, and the reproductive tract. Mucosa, rich in blood and lymph vessels, comprises an inner epithelium, a middle layer (lamina propria) of loose CONNECTIVE TISSUE, and an outer layer (muscularis mucosae) of SMOOTH MUSCLE CELLS that separates the mucosa from submucosa. D002767 Cholecystostomy Establishment of an opening into the gallbladder either for drainage or surgical communication with another part of the digestive tract, usually the duodenum or jejunum. Cholecystostomies
D004564 Electrocoagulation Procedures using an electrically heated wire or scalpel to treat hemorrhage (e.g., bleeding ulcers) and to ablate tumors, mucosal lesions, and refractory arrhythmias. It is different from ELECTROSURGERY which is used more for cutting tissue than destroying and in which the patient is part of the electric circuit.
