OBJECTIVE We aimed to investigate potential association between the exposure of bisphenol A (BPA) and preeclampsia. METHODS Concentrations of BPA were assessed in 58 pregnancies including 35 normotensive and 23 preeclamptic women, using a highly sensitive gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) method. RESULTS BPA was detected in maternal blood, fetal blood and placental tissue; and actual concentrations of BPA were determined. Interestingly, significant accumulation of BPA in the placentas of women with preeclampsia compared to normotensive women has been shown. CONCLUSIONS This is the first study to highlight a significant correlation between preeclampsia and a high accumulation of BPA in the placenta.

D010636 Phenols Benzene derivatives that include one or more hydroxyl groups attached to the ring structure.
D010920 Placenta A highly vascularized mammalian fetal-maternal organ and major site of transport of oxygen, nutrients, and fetal waste products. It includes a fetal portion (CHORIONIC VILLI) derived from TROPHOBLASTS and a maternal portion (DECIDUA) derived from the uterine ENDOMETRIUM. The placenta produces an array of steroid, protein and peptide hormones (PLACENTAL HORMONES). Placentoma, Normal,Placentome,Placentas,Placentomes
D011225 Pre-Eclampsia A complication of PREGNANCY, characterized by a complex of symptoms including maternal HYPERTENSION and PROTEINURIA with or without pathological EDEMA. Symptoms may range between mild and severe. Pre-eclampsia usually occurs after the 20th week of gestation, but may develop before this time in the presence of trophoblastic disease. D005260 Female Females
D005312 Fetal Blood Blood of the fetus. Exchange of nutrients and waste between the fetal and maternal blood occurs via the PLACENTA.
