Correlation of prostatic specific antigen with Gleason grade in prostate cancer. 1989

One hundred consecutive patients undergoing radical nerve-sparing prostatectomies and pelvic lymph node dissection were included in this study. These patients were treated from August 1985 through December 1986 at the Ohio State University Medical Center. Gleason grades 2, 3, and 4 patients had normal prostate specific antigens (PSA) preoperatively, except two, and Gleason grades 5, 6, and 7 had 50% elevated PSA's preoperatively. 76% of patients with Gleason grades 8, 9, and 10 had elevated PSA's preoperatively. It was concluded that PSA does correlated with Gleason grade.
