Lupus anticoagulant and late onset seizures. 1989

Lupus anticoagulant was found in the plasma of 4 patients who presented with late-onset epileptic seizures. Three of the patients had clinical or electroencephalographic evidence of focality. No significant cerebral pathological findings were detected by the computed tomogram except for an old infarction in one case. None of the patients fulfilled the diagnostic criteria for systemic lupus erythematosus. The relationship between late-onset seizures and the presence of lupus anticoagulant is discussed. The possible etiology of an ischemic episode due to hypercoagulability, expressed uniquely by seizures, is suggested.

D016682	Lupus Coagulation Inhibitor	An antiphospholipid antibody found in association with a variety of diseases (e.g., SYSTEMIC LUPUS ERYTHEMATOSUS and ANTIPHOSPHOLIPID SYNDROME) as well as in healthy individuals. In vitro, the antibody interferes with the conversion of prothrombin to thrombin and prolongs the partial thromboplastin time. In vivo, it exerts a procoagulant effect resulting in thrombosis mainly in the larger veins and arteries. It further causes obstetrical complications, including fetal death and spontaneous abortion, as well as a variety of hematologic and neurologic complications.
