[Age and ventricular secretion in healthy men]. 1989

V P Lebedev

Gastric secretion was evaluated in 821 male inpatients aged 18-55 years with unaffected gastrointestinal, nervous and endocrine systems. With age, there was a tendency to increasing manufacture of gastric juice, hydrochloric acid, pepsin and gastric mucoprotein in 70% of the examinees. Reaching its maximum at the age of 25, the secretion remained stable for the following 15 years, progressively reducing thereafter. To the age of 50 gastric secretion diminished by 16.7%, the parameters lowing in the following order: volume of secretion, concentrations of hydrochloric acid, pepsin, gastric mucoprotein From the onset of physiological involution of the gastric glands observed usually at the age of 40 the response of the glands to reflex intestinal stimuli fell (explanation for basal secretion reduction), while that to humoral stimuli rose (cabbage-water). Hyposecretion may be, however, observed early in adolescence (10% of the examinees) and hypersecretion in middle life (20% of the examinees over 50). The results are thought helpful in clinical practice, occupational selection and mass health examinations of the population.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008297 Male Males
D008875 Middle Aged An adult aged 45 - 64 years. Middle Age
D009088 Mucoproteins Conjugated proteins in which mucopolysaccharides are combined with proteins. The mucopolysaccharide moiety is the predominant group with the protein making up only a small percentage of the total weight.
D010434 Pepsin A Formed from pig pepsinogen by cleavage of one peptide bond. The enzyme is a single polypeptide chain and is inhibited by methyl 2-diaazoacetamidohexanoate. It cleaves peptides preferentially at the carbonyl linkages of phenylalanine or leucine and acts as the principal digestive enzyme of gastric juice. Pepsin,Pepsin 1,Pepsin 3
D012016 Reference Values The range or frequency distribution of a measurement in a population (of organisms, organs or things) that has not been selected for the presence of disease or abnormality. D005750 Gastric Juice The liquid secretion of the stomach mucosa consisting of hydrochloric acid (GASTRIC ACID); PEPSINOGENS; INTRINSIC FACTOR; GASTRIN; MUCUS; and the bicarbonate ion (BICARBONATES). D005753 Gastric Mucosa Lining of the STOMACH, consisting of an inner EPITHELIUM, a middle LAMINA PROPRIA, and an outer MUSCULARIS MUCOSAE. The surface cells produce MUCUS that protects the stomach from attack by digestive acid and enzymes. When the epithelium invaginates into the LAMINA PROPRIA at various region of the stomach (CARDIA; GASTRIC FUNDUS; and PYLORUS), different tubular gastric glands are formed. These glands consist of cells that secrete mucus, enzymes, HYDROCHLORIC ACID, or hormones.
