The wrists of 16 normal volunteers were examined via high-resolution sonography with special reference to the carpal tunnel. In all cases the surfaces of the carpal bones, the flexor retinaculum, the tendons, the vessels, (Aa. radialis and ulnaris) and the nerves (Nn. medianus and ulnaris) were observed. The sonographic characteristics of the median nerve are discussed and the possibilities of identification are demonstrated. It appears that the echogenicity of the nerve depends strongly on the angle of the ultrasound beam.

D008475 Median Nerve A major nerve of the upper extremity. In humans, the fibers of the median nerve originate in the lower cervical and upper thoracic spinal cord (usually C6 to T1), travel via the brachial plexus, and supply sensory and motor innervation to parts of the forearm and hand.
