The somatostatin analogue SMS 201-995 in long-term treatment of vipoma. Case report. 1989

C Christensen
Intensive Care Department, Kolding City Hospital, Denmark.

In a 60-year-old woman with an inoperable vipoma, satisfactory improvement of severe watery diarrhea was obtained over a 12-month period by subcutaneous administration of the somatostatin analogue SMS 201-995. It is suggested that SMS 201-995 may be useful in such inoperable cases, or when surgery would carry a high risk.

D010190 Pancreatic Neoplasms Tumors or cancer of the PANCREAS. Depending on the types of ISLET CELLS present in the tumors, various hormones can be secreted: GLUCAGON from PANCREATIC ALPHA CELLS; INSULIN from PANCREATIC BETA CELLS; and SOMATOSTATIN from the SOMATOSTATIN-SECRETING CELLS. Most are malignant except the insulin-producing tumors (INSULINOMA). D011877 Radionuclide Imaging The production of an image obtained by cameras that detect the radioactive emissions of an injected radionuclide as it has distributed differentially throughout tissues in the body. The image obtained from a moving detector is called a scan, while the image obtained from a stationary camera device is called a scintiphotograph. D003969 Vipoma A tumor that secretes VASOACTIVE INTESTINAL PEPTIDE, a neuropeptide that causes VASODILATION; relaxation of smooth muscles; watery DIARRHEA; HYPOKALEMIA; and HYPOCHLORHYDRIA. Vipomas, derived from the pancreatic ISLET CELLS, generally are malignant and can secrete other hormones. In most cases, Vipomas are located in the PANCREAS but can be found in extrapancreatic sites.
